I hate schedules. It's true. That reason, coupled with my love to create and be crafty is how denilleeo designs was born back in 2007. Not wanting to go into my 9-5 web design job, sparked a desire to try something new. After experimenting in the direct marketing business for another 4 years, I finally figured out that I just needed to do my "own thing". There was this relatively new website called Etsy where people could create their own storefront, post their handmade items for a small fee, and wait for people from around the world to buy those products.
I did post "items" I had made, but no one wanted my crappy wire barrettes and rings. A few people bought my paintings, but this is NOT what I was expecting. I HAD to make this work. My supportive husband was not going to let me loaf around the house forever, checking my email and shop stats every couple of seconds for new sales. I guess that doesn't count as working. Hmph.
So I prayed. Feeling lost and discouraged, I asked God to guide me. And I really dug down deep, trying to figure out how I could use my supposed talents to glorify God and touch other people's lives. That started me on the path to where I am today. First, it was wooden pendants that morphed into glass pendants that morphed into custom image wine charms that lead me to my niche of company logo image party favors for big events. Maybe that sounds silly, but I went from 13 sales my first year, to over 170 last year. My revenue has increased by over 2500%. I've made thousands of charms, hundreds of pendants, bookmarks and bracelets, and have hopefully brought smiles to many of people.
Being part of the handmade community is so much more than making money. It's about creating something special and unique, for someone else who is special and unique. Each item has a little story, whether it's a couple about to get married, a company celebrating their success, or a lonely person needing a keepsake of their lost loved one.
Not only am I able to work from home and stay with my kids, I'm also able to contribute to causes that mean a lot to our family. AND I get to glorify God through it all. For without Him, I'd have nothing.
